While the weather on the summit Monday night is foggy and rainy, last night (Sunday night), the weather was great to be out in and enjoy the view of the stars and Waning Gibbous Moon. Here our night observer, Ryan, can be seen hiking up to the summit sign for a better perspective.

The calendar says spring
Nature says not so fast
Baxter State Park says
Thou shalt not pass
Winter conditions prevail in the park and the gate will remain closed until such time as travel in the park can be undertaken safely and with minimal resource damage.
Thank you for understanding. ... See MoreSee Less
You guys doing stuff like this is why the park stays beautiful. Grateful that Baxter (our park) is taken care of in this way. Keep up the great work.
Thank you for respecting the PARK!
Past years if the snow pack was sufficient (as it was this year) the park remained open for day use after March 31. This appears to be a change in policy. Could you kindly share when this change occurred and the rational behind making it.
Thick snow pack this year up there.
I see the self entitled is in this crowd too ,it's non y a business when anything changed if it did or didn't ,get a life
When does it open?
Well said... I think

Water flowing under snow presents a hazard in winter and spring. The waterfall shown was frozen last week and was directly under the ski tracks above the crown of the avalanche that took a life on April 11. The ice created a thin spot in the snowpack as well as a convex roll and may have been the trigger point. Intimate knowledge of your intended terrain may help avoid known trigger points but is also a way to push too close to the edge of your safety margins in periods of marginal snow stability. ... The Great Adirondack Trail Run (GATR) registration opens May 1st, 8:00am! As always the 11.5 miles race will sell out in about 20 minutes or as fast as we can answer the phones!
Dont forget that you can also sign up for the 3.5 mile fun run if you dont get in the main event, which is a great season opener!
This charity event, in conjunction with our partners at @patagonia, help to support the @ausableriver and Boquet River Association, provides an educational opportunity for children and adults about our sensitive river ecosystems and a chance to get in the mountains and celebrate Spring!
See you on June 1st & 2nd for an entire weekend of events, swag, education, food and fun! ... See MoreSee Less
Looking to participate in this race for first time. I’m trying to organize just how one registers for this event. Can you clarify what has to actually happen on May 1st please. Do I have to call in? And... what is cost of registration?
