Season opener for me. Temp at start was balmy 13 F, and climbing through the day, windy and snowing. Decided to climbed Left Hand Monkey Wrench and Upper Hitchcock to keep out of the wind and snow. From the parking lot near Elephant Head, along the tracks south, lots of unconsolidated, foot deep snow on the tracks, making for a nice pre-workout. Started at Hitchcock Gully at the cross/concrete pillar. Pleasantly surprised to find the approach to the ice of LHMW was completely covered in snow. LHMW in great shape. Continuing up to Upper Hitchcock, also in fine shape! We set off two snow slides in Upper due to the snow accumulations that morning, one burying the ropes. Thankfully, we were belaying from behind the rock on the right. Final pillar variation at the top was excellent. A trudge in the snow to to the left to the hiking trail exit. Trail was completely covered and mostly packed. When we got back, we had a present from the NH DOT snow plows, a 3-foot snow bank behind car. Make sure to bring shovels.
