    Matt Horner found some ice starting to form. It won't be long now!

    " Found some #ice! A full 7 weeks earlier than last year! Some not so well bonded, some well bonded, sticky and fun! Still relatively thin but growing rapidly... yay ice climbing:)"

    A report from Matt Horner 11-23-2016

    "The familiar view of Chapel Pond, looking down Choiunards gully. The #icewas beautiful blue plastic today:) The hardest part is getting to the climb when the pond is not frozen."

    Awesome, thought that was the initial headwall.

    Thanks Doug.

    Any idea how the trap dike is?

    Climbed it on Sat. 11-26-16. It's full of deep, wet snow and very little ice. Serious work getting up to the slab. FWIW - the slab is in good shape.

    "Here it Comes"... and there it goes, at least for now. Warm rain over the whole region until the end of the week. 44 and rain at my house at 1800' in Keene right now. Maybe things will start to form this weekend when it gets colder.

    Anybody have updates for Chapel Pond for this weekend?

    The ice was wet and detached two days ago. It was 35 and sunny yesterday and it's above freezing already today. The best bet would be to hold off as long as possible unless you're able to come up this weekend and next.

    Agree with Bill. Not much at Chapel Pond right now. Drove through Cascade Pass today; you could do some top-roping there if your belayer is well off to the side to not be under big pieces that fell off. It will be probably be better by the weekend; watch Ed's report at Rock and River for some specifics. But this early might be a good time for a bunch of TR laps.

    Any suggestions for easy top rope settings around Keen, Keen valley, Saint-Hubert or Lake Placid (NY). I have experience in rock climbing and would like to start ice climbing.

    Cascade pass, you can walk to the top.

    Many spots CAN be toproped, with varying degrees of difficulty. But Paul is right; the absolute easiest place to set up is Pitchoff Right in Cascade Pass. It's God's perfectly designed ice top roping area. It's an easy ramp walk up to the top, and then a whole range of lines from 30' NEI2 easy stuff on the right end to 70' overhanging and mixed stuff out left. Even on a busy day with three or four other parties there, I've always been able to set up something worth climbing.

    There are a few spots in Chapel Pond Pass to top rope, but they are all harder to set up, and have less ice and less variety.

    Well OK, it's party time!

    Drove through Cascade Pass today (on the way to XC skiing at Van Ho, which is in good shape). MANY folks out enjoying the ice. I saw:

    At least 3 parties at Pitchoff right;
    Folks roping up for Sisters area;
    A party on Cascade Waterfall;
    A party on 3 flows (did you guys really walk across the lake? That would scare me!).
    Quarry is still pretty dry, just a few candlesticks.

    So climbing is IN. :D

    I wouldn't say it's party time just yet.

    Yesterday there were crowds all over what little ice there is. Only Lions in CP canyon is a bold lead. The rest need time to build. Multi Gully is dry. Like Tom said, the pass was packed. Chouinard's looked like it needed time. CIT was good... but you had to time it just right or there was a TR on it.

    I would wait until next weekend unless you're already here or live close.
